Character and Layout Concepts
Character Designers (Chris Morin, Naseer Pasha, Kevin Cato, Dale Watson, Ramone Johnson, Tenzin Chime)
- Jewels - The artist. I've heard that there's already a design in the works but if you guys have an idea, by all means!
- Ziq - Same as Jewels
- Luna - The lovely lady. Basically go all out with your dream girls, guys! Also! Don't worry about sketching her with her missing parts. Just design her completed and we can subtract the (un)needed parts.
- "Kodama" (Example gifs of Miyazaki's Kodama in the link) - The little gremlins. I see them as equally simple to the Miyazaki ones but we can play with that annoying edge ours have.
- Guardian Deities -Two large, robotic in movement, centurions. Big guys with big swords!
- Random characters - The best thing about this script is that we can be absolutely random. Have at it guys!
Background Artists (Vanessa Vidakovic, Joseph Ng, Tenzin Chime, Guiseppe Arabia, Mark Conmigo)
- Apartment - Personally, I see Jewels living in a tiny studio apartment that can barely fit his drafting table. For some of you, think about your dorm rooms. Also, a specific list of what it needs: drafting desk, television, second table of sorts, small one person couch, a washroom door and at least one window.
- Hallway - Uh. A hallway. Need I say more?
If any of you guys are having a problem getting the creative juices flowing and need some references to jump start with, give me a holler via Facebook, blog comments or email!
Good luck and have fun! Play a little~
Rough Colour Keys
Naseer specified a specific tone to me and I hope that I properly conveyed it.

Ziq - The final shot of the film |
For all of you who believe you are an artist - whether it be of a visual, literary, musical, or martial nature - you should heed these words, "Take a step back, and take a deep breath."
This film is about keeping yourself in check. We can't, no matter how much we love our work, let it eat us alive. Sometimes taking a step back away from our work to clear our minds is the best thing we can do for ourselves.
PREMISE: Jewels is ready to give up on his work out of frustration, and Ziq (among things) won't let him leave the apartment.
NOTE: Ziq's power in this film is that he can bring any drawing to life with a simple touch.
The entire rest of the film is Jewels trying to get away from his work, literally. His work comes to life and physically won't let him leave. This is the basis of our film, a metaphor for being so attached to your work that you can't (literally) leave.
CUT: Jewels is leaving his messy drafting desk where all his unfinished work is. There rests a Kit Kat bar, among other junk stuff, at his work area. Jewels is getting up to put on a shirt so he can leave his apartment for a break. As Jewels gets the shirt and proceeds to the door of his no bedroom apartment, he stops because he hears a voice, Ziq (who is one of his unfinished drawings on the drafting table).
In confusion, he freezes. Not because it's ridiculous that his drawing is talking to him, but because he thinks that he really should finish the drawing of Ziq before he goes out for a break. Jewels walks over to the table, finishes the drawing of Ziq, and finally (with a weighty sigh of relief) puts his marker down and heads to the door once more. As Jewels turns from his desk, he is unaware that Ziq has come to life off of the page. Back turned and heading towards the door, Jewels is oblivious that Ziq touched one of the unfinished drawings nearby, and brought it to life; a young girl with no nose, ears, or pupils. Jewels, now at the door handle, stops in his tracks before the seductive, half headed girl, Jessabelle.
As Jewels is close to finishing the new and improved Jessabelle, he notices that little forest gremlins (some of his older, crappier drawings - The Kodama) are calling his name.
Jewels looks, for the first time, in shock at the site of these little guys, all surrounding his feet. He tries to ignore them to finish Jessabelle's eyes, but fails at it.
Ziq ducks out of view to reveal the exit door. However, the exit door is now blocked off by two massive guardian spirit deities with swords. The swords come slicing down (one from a painting from the upper left of the door, and one from the upper right) and make a cross together, thus, blocking the door once and for all. Until now, Jewels was compelled to stay because he was convinced. Now, however, he has no choice. His work literally won't let him leave.
Jewels is backing away from the door in terror as the two guardians march towards Jewels, wordlessly. His drawings in the background continue to bicker, saying "Finish us!"
As Jewels is trying to manoeuvre around his apartment to get around the guards and make a break for it, Ziq rushes over to a large closed sketch book and flips it open, bringing life to many unfinished drawings. Being after being is coming to life as the pages turn, while Ziq rushes over to some hanging paintings and drops them with a single touch. As the slam to the ground, they come to life.
In the midst of all this chaos, the drawings actually start fighting among themselves, a "No I want to be finished," "no I DO!" sort of fight. That is Jewels' secret weapon to get out, the distraction. He makes way for the door and we cut to Ziq. Taken aback because he didn't anticipate the chaos, Ziq slams his hand on a table. His hand (a black shadow) starts spreading like roots along the table. In its path it touches all drawings on the table, bringing each to life. From here on out, the "viral infection" continues about the room, making it ever darker.
As Jewels finally touches the door handle, the room goes silent for a fraction of a second as all the drawings stop in their brawl to see what Jewels is doing. Jewels looks over his shoulder to see that they've unified and are marching to him. One too many fidgets with the door handle leaves Jewels in a bad place; the drawings grab him and bring him right to Ziq. (Note: In the background, the viral infection is still spreading around the room).
Now, face to face with Jewels, Ziq takes Jewels right hand and over powers it to the drafting table one last time and forces him to draw. Draw, draw, draw, is what is being chanted in the background. As he sits at the desk before a blank sheet of paper, he sneakily looks to his side without turning his head. The infection is coming closer and closer to his table. Jewels, in a final act of desperation, quickly draws a bomb on the page with an unlit fuse. The infection touches the page, sets the fuse, and Jewel makes a run for it as it explodes.
CUT: Exterior, Jewels' apartment (the hallway). Jewels is now finally out the door. He takes a breath.
CUT: Same location, different angle. Jewels is sitting on the floor, back braced against the door, eating a Kit Kat bar.
CUT: Interior of Jewels' apartment. Everything is back to its normal clutter. With clear loud footstep SFX, Jewels slowly walks over to his desk, takes a seat, and picks up his pencil.
CUT: Medium wide, Jewels backside, scratching away calmly on a fresh piece of paper at his drafting desk.
CUT: 3/4 Close. Jewels' eye direction, originally straight down at his page, slightly shifts over to the right (signifying that he is looking at the corner of his page now). His mouth opens slightly as if to say, "Huh?"
CUT: A tiny, somewhat silly drawing of Ziq is in the left corner of the page. It's hand starts to move ever so slightly. To this, Jewels draws a box around Ziq, and outside of that box writes, "Think here."

If people need references to bounce ideas (uniforms, government portraits, dollar bills), make a comment here and I'll reply with some links.
Background Artists (Vanessa Vidakovic, Joseph Ng, Tenzin Chime, Guiseppe Arabia, Mark Conmigo)
- Jewels' Apartment
- Alleyway

- Graveyard with trees nearby
With Jewel's apartment, there are specific things that need to be included (telephone, TV, hallway, bathroom). Again, if anyone needs references to bounce ideas off of, make a comment here and I'll see what I can do.
Also, I'd like us to think of ideas for the graffiti that Jewels is going to spray in parliament.
Personally, I think it'd be a cool idea to do something like Banksy.

SCRIPT DRAFT 1 - KRYLON NO.56
We all need to make decisions in life. Sometimes, they are a little darker than we realise. But it's always under the same guise, what's it all worth?
"To be successful," he'll certainly tell you, "is to live for yourself without any borders."
But what if you didn't want it anymore. What if you'd lost so much in the midst of finally achieving your goal, that you wanted to just say, "F*ck off" to everything and everyone, because it just wasn't worth it anymore? Would you give it all up?
SETTING: JEWELS' CRAPPY MESSY APARTMENT
OPENING SHOT: reverse medium shot of Jewels on a telephone conversation held between he and an old friend.
CUT TO OPENING CREDITS
CUT TO CLOSE UP OF JEWELS' FACE, PROFILE
CUT TO OPENING CREDITS
CUT TO MESSY DESK: Jewels' hands are rummaging through a messy pile of papers, DRAWINGS, magazines, ART SUPPLIES, to find a remote control. *CM* 9FLD track on hands from 9FLD-C to 9FLD 3W3S. Jewels finds the remote.
**LAST CUT TO OPENING CREDITS**
CUT TO A TELEVISION SET THAT IS ALREADY ON: Three or so channel flips. The first two are gibberish. The last is a news reporter talking about an event somehow shaped by dictatorial oppression. perhaps a report on unjust imprisonment.
CUT TO JEWELS FACE, MEDIUM 3/4: Jewels stares at the screen with a slowly moving tooth brush that comes to a stop, mildly concerned.
CUT TO BLACK SCREEN - INSIDE CLOSET POV: (TV SFX ARE MUFFLED AND LOWERED) Medium shot of Jewels opening the closet, rummaging for the right shirt. Throws a few items of clothing behind him, as if they will be used at a later time.
Jewels turns to look. H/U SHOT BEHIND Ziq to reveal Ziq sitting in a chair, eating a red hot apple.
CUT TO ZIQ'S FACE, MEDIUM:
CUT TO JEWELS: Looks at Ziq and says "I'm leaving. Tonight."
CUT TO BACK TO ZIQ: His eyes trail, hinting that Jewels is walking away.
CUT TO A WASHROOM SINK: Jewels picks up his razor (old fashioned one). Staring in the mirror right back at him is Ziq, creeping up from behind. As he brings the blade to his lathered face, he responds to Ziq's ridicule.
CUT TO OPEN WINDOW: Wind SFX + Curtains fluttering. Blows some papers off the nearby table.
CUT & SLOW T/I - OPEN PHOTO ALBUM: Reveals old pictures of Jewels and his family. As the wind blows the pages of the album, the pictures progressively reveal less and less people in the photos. By the last three pages or so, Jewels is in many different places, but all alone, with barely a smile on his face.
CUT TO MIRROR: Jewels is crouched over the sink. All that is in view is the top of his head, and the reflection that shows Ziq. Jewels rises with a clean face. Strokes his hand down his face slowly and just stares in the mirror.
Jewels' eyes, without moving his head, looks at Ziq's reflection for the first time in the mirror and slightly shakes his head in disagreement and closes his eyes (The head shake is important to the scene because it's more like "this is such a freakin' mess," as opposed to a simple head shake in relation to what Ziq just said).
CUT TO HALLWAY CORRIDOR, MEDIUM WIDE: SFX of washroom light switch being turned off. Jewels leaves the washroom, walks away from cam. After him comes the sneaky Ziq, only partially coming out from the washroom, but just enough to put Jewels in the camera's blind spot.
CUT TO JEWELS' ROOM: Jewels has a DUFFEL BAG in his hands, rummaging through the room for things to put in it. Shirt, pants, etc. Every time he lands his hands upon a piece of art equipment (ie. Brush, pen) he takes a slight pause and throws it aside without care. Jewels finally lands on a pocket watch.
CUT TO CLOSE UP OF POCKET WATCH: (AO) Jewels: I know ma.
CUT TO JEWELS' FACE, CLOSE UP: (AO) Jewels: I know. It's okay, really.
CUT TO MEDIUM OF JEWELS SITTING AT A TABLE WITH A PHONE: This is a flashback of Jewels on the phone with his mum.
CUT: Same shot, same camera angle, different outfit.
CUT: Same shot, same camera angle, different outfit, slightly older.
CUT TO JEWELS' FACE: With a hard look on his face, and tears streaming down his cheeks, and something casting a lot of light on his face.
CUT TO JEWELS' MUM: Reveal that it is a funeral, and her body is being burned.
In the background, to the far left are some trees, and under one of those trees is Ziq. We are too far from the trees to notice it as of yet.
CUT TO ZIQ UNDER TREE, WIDE.
CUT TO ZIQ UNDER TREE, CLOSE: Ziq's expression is slightly twisted. This is the first indication that he is sinister. Before he was just odd and quirky, but now, he seems like he's up to something.
CUT TO REAL TIME, JEWEL'S FACE, CLOSE UP: Closes his eyes one last time and we CUT TO HIS POCKET, CLOSE UP, to feature him putting the watch in the pocket hastily.
CUT TO JEWELS
Jewels moves about the room gathering the last of his things.
Finally, Ziq's character design changes. His hair grows longer, his skin more pale, and his eyes become yellowish-orange.
CUT TO JEWELS' FACE: Jewels stares at Camera (towards Ziq o/s), and we hear a faint fading in AO of a muffled argument.
CUT TO FLASH BACK 1 - JEWELS AND BOGDAN, MOSCOW ALLEY WAY, 4 YEARS AGO: Jewels has a spray can in his hand and is ignoring Bogdan's words.
CUT TO JEWELS: Continues spraying the wall slowly, without acknowledging Bogdan's advice.
CUT TO JEWELS FACE: REAL TIME (Camera head on, CLOSE UP)
CUT TO ZIQ'S FACE (who looks like Bogdan, but with an evil smile)
CUT TO JEWELS: smiling to himself.
Jewels walks away from Ziq, not paying any attention to his face or his words. To this, Ziq starts getting frustrated.
CUT TO JEWELS FACE - PROFILE: Ziq's scary, and real form (something evil, profile) comes darting out of the darkness, right in front of Jewels' face and is twitching and shaking and jittering irregularly (as if he has a seizure)
Jewels doesn't quiver in fear in this scene, but does inch back just a bit, as if worried/repulsed. After this final line delivered by Ziq, Jewels closes his eyes. As he reopens them, his apartment is the original mess it was, and Ziq is gone. This is a moment of silence.
CUT TO JEWELS READYING TO LEAVE: Jewels puts on his scarf, puts on a hat. Takes one last look around his apartment and leaves. He slams an abandoned sticker on the front of his door, throws away the key, and proceeds to the camera.
CUT TO CREDITS: As the credits roll we HEAR three different news casters, all telling the same story, but in a different way.
*CASTER 1 (AO)
Trouble is ensuing in downtown Moscow tonight as thousands are gathering around the parliament doors, to what seems like a grand public act of vandalism.
*CASTER 2 (AO)
Tonight, local citizens gather around the doors of parliament to a public rally held by only one man. The identity of the lobbyist is unknown at this time, but experts are calling this one of the greatest public statements in our nations history.
*CASTER 3 (AO)
We are live on the scene at Bolgav avenue, in front of the Parliament head gates, where thousands are gathering in opposition to President Muliari's regime. Local media reports say that this protest was instigated by one man. At 11:16 tonight, the unknown lobbyist managed to bypass military officials and lock them out. His identity remains unknown, but everyone agrees that after tonight, his face will never be forgotten.
CUT FROM CREDITS - FINAL SEQUENCE: We reveal a firing squad cocking their guns and readying a spot light BEHIND Parliament gates. We cut to a black screen which is illuminated with the spotlight and reveals Jewels standing in front of a wall with a spray can, Krylon Red, no.56. He turns 3/4 to look over his shoulder with a faint grin. As he turns, we have a hook up shot that is 20 ft away. This is our big reveal; Jewels' masterpiece, tagged right on Parliament's main doors. Cut back to firing squad (profile), aiming to fire. Cut back to Jewels (profile) with his hands to his side (like a "Jesus" or "I am the champ" pose) and he looks up and closes his eyes. This is where we hear Ziq's final words as a whispered AO.

Naseer
Tora (I think we can borrow some ideas from Corey’s portion with Jules’ talking with Luna and borrow some dialogue from my ending)
Corey - Feeling Tora abit on the girlfriend part, feels like it doesn’t have much impact for how close she was to jewels. I like the parts with Bogdan though. I also feel like not much of other peoples writing has made it into this draft. If anyones wondering what i’m talking about, check the link at top of doc, an look under jan 12th for the past scripts. Also, since the setting is more based in Russia, I think we should consider that in the speaking manneurisms too. It feels more southern/western continental slang at parts. Almost like New orleans influenced.
